Summer Picnic Recap

July 1, 2015 | Branden Schwab

Alongside the winding bicycle and walking paths of the Ozarks Greenway, nestled within the hills feeding Galloway Creek, and just south of the caves at Sequiota Park, sits one of Springfield’s finest historic gathering places – Creek Side Pub. This longtime source of respite and libations for weary day laborers bent on celebrating their evening hours within this idyllic slice of Ozarks landscape, served as backdrop and stage for our first annual SGFC Summer Picnic.

Revered owner/operator Bear (& daughter) poured up the specialty drinks and brews while a sizable SGFC crowd raised their glasses, shirking the day’s concerns and challenges to celebrate the Summer, the Evening, and the Creative Community. As Creatives mingled, ideas and friendships sparked while fireflys cruised lazily through the thick evening air and cool creekwaters flowed past, headed towards nearby Lake Springfield.

Armed with tongs & spatula, guest grillmaster Tim Shelburn manned the coals alongside a delightfully delectable spread of bursting hot (and tofurkey!) dogs, chipped potatoes, popped corn, and some mighty delicious cookies. Indeed, there were yum-yums in many a tum-tum!

Thank you to everyone, especially the new faces, for coming out and helping make this night not only possible, but downright special. A lot of incredible things happening throughout Springfield’s Creative Community this summer, but special thanks to:

  • Wesley Noble for sharing about his podcast, Spirit of the Midwest (oddly enough, this is the ghost phrase that has been mysteriously appearing from my clipboard at random)
  • Steven Eudaly for introducing myself and others to the world of sound recording and the technology and products that make it possible
  • Megan Wagler for informing me of a possible job opportunity!
  • Fred Lawler & Marcy Chandler for telling me about Treehouse, “the online interactive education platform that offers courses in web, mobile and business development”

One of the greatest aspects of SGFC is the chance to connect with and learn from other Creatives outside your area of focus or expertise. If you didn’t get a chance to make it out, join us next time!
