Update: ARTS in the Park | Cloud House & Farmers Park Art Show

March 3, 2016 | Branden Schwab

Last May, Springfield Creatives held its regular monthly meeting at the CAST co-working space in Farmers Park (check out the meeting recap). Over the course of the evening, Creatives were introduced to artists from the Outpost, a Farmers Park residency program, including conceptual artist Matthew Mazzotta.

Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for videos of two new Nebraska-based projects by Mazzotta titled “The Storefront Theater” and “Rural Legends”. In the meantime, check out his installation at Farmers Park…

Following an informal outdoor livingroom discussion with the community in the fall of ‘14, Mazzotta conceived of the Cloud House, an interactive, didactic sculpture that explores the natural water cycle using a trickle-down approach to educate visitors about resource conservation, agriculture and rural living in the Ozarks.

Mazzotta often starts his projects by inviting members of the community to participate in an outdoor living room discussion.

“Floating” above an open-ended pavilion with reclaimed wood walls and a quintessential tin-roof, is a stylistic “fluffy” white storm cloud, slightly reminiscent of what you might see while riding the Dumbo carousel at Disneyland. Complete with motion-activated rocking chairs that release a cascade of “rain,” the structure evokes a common scene from the front porch of a rural Ozarks’ farmhouse, playing out the kind of gentle, life-giving downpour one might experience during a summer rainshower. As raindrops pitter-patter on the tin roof, water drains down to planter boxes hung below the window openings.

Following what were apparently water problems with the original cloud, an updated Cloud House is set to officially re-open during the Earth Day celebration at Farmers Park on April 22nd.

The event will be one of several precursors leading up to the Farmers Park Art Show taking placing Oct. 14 – 15, 2016 and featuring award-winning visual artists from the Ozarks to sell their work and visit with Springfield’s art lovers. The show will open at 5 p.m. on Friday to VIP invitation holders, and then open to the public on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“This will be the second curated art show at Farmers Park, and it’s designed to foster “face-time” between show-goers and artists in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Mediums will include (but not be limited to) painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, art jewelry, sculpture, glass and art furniture.  Artists represent the spirit of Farmers Park and are chosen based on their creativity, technique, craftsmanship and professionalism.”
